Sadie, our mini-poodle, has taken a turn to the bossy side. She enforces a new command called “move.” When we ask Lily to “move” from the chair, sofa, bed or other restricted zone, Sadie begins to woof. We think she is trying to say “move” with us. Lily follows the move command – when and only when Sadie participates in the process!

Here is where Lily usually is when we ask her to “move…”

Sadie and Lily have started today in full throttle. They have been chasing each other through the house hoping for a treat, toy, rawhide, or outdoor activity. Sadie already enjoyed an egg. They have shredded a toy and left it on deck for future playful activity. Lily is angling for a coveted can of food. She nudges the can with her nose since it is on an open shelf near her food station. Sadie is currently playing possum. She likes to pretend that nothing much will interest her by fake-napping on the sofa or on Lily’s chair. The nano-second that we make a move for the door or kitchen Sadie will present herself as Ready-To-Go. Lily will carefully study Sadie the squirt. If it looks like Sadie is on to something big, like a car ride or extra tasty treat, Lily is in. Otherwise, she will not be bothered to lift her head from her resting position. MM & RY 2011

Sadie and Lily love to play at a place we call the playground. It’s a corner of Fairmount Park that has been taken over by dogs in the mornings and afternoons near the Art Museum in Philadelphia. Today we were mostly on our own. Lily enjoyed thrashing on the dirt. Sadie investigated all of the smells and scouted out our route. At times Lily, our stubborn boxer, decided she did not want to go. Everyone had a great time because spring is in the air. Here are some photos of our walk. MM & RY 2011

Sadie's Window

Sadie's Window

Sadie lives in her window several hours each day. We try to keep it smudge-free, but that is a difficult challenge since she really does enjoy that spot. Most of our neighbors will support our claim that Sadie attends to footsteps, car noises, and sudden thumps of all kinds from her window perch. She closely watches all of the people entering and leaving their homes in her line of sight. She has a keen ear for activities at the bus stop and local restaurant too. Her responses to these stimuli include her trademark low pitch grumble growl, her sharp “what do you think you are doing/who do you think you are walking by my house” bark, and what we call bark-fest.

Bark-fest occurs several times per day. The mail carrier is almost always on the receiving end of bark-fest. Only a vigorous morning playground  visit can prevent it. The folks who drop off restaurant fliers in our mail slot regularly get a dose of bark-fest. Most of all, our dog-walking friends enjoy Sadie’s bark-fest. Some of her friends will hop up on our stoop in the hopes that Sadie will come out just at that moment. And, every once in a while she does! Her best friend at the moment is Max, a two-year old cutie who is smaller than Sadie. He adores her and surprisingly, she likes him too! Through all of Sadie’s noisy and smudgy window behavior, Lily-the-Smoosh naps in her chair. MM & RY 2011

Sadie and Lily after their Tropical Pawadise Pawpawty DJ Duties

Sadie and Lily enjoy their DJ duties at monthly Pawpawty events organized by Twitter Anipals to raise money for animal charities.  The girls have their own Blip.fm station here. Today the Pawpawty theme was Tropical Pawadise. You can read more about the event here.   We shared tunes from Brazil (the Tropical part) and featured musical artists from Philadelphia (the paradise part – at least as far as Sadie and Lily are concerned)! Sadie is a clever girl. She has heightened senses and therefore barks a lot. She barks to let us know that she has heard a noise in the distance. We often doubt her, but over the years we have learned she is not random. She simply has superior hearing. Last night she heard thunder in the distance many seconds before we did. Like all dogs, she also has a superior sense of smell as well. For instance, she discovered this eggshell at Fairmount Park last week with her nose! It has since washed away in the rains of the past couple of days. In the mean time, Sadie has parked on the favorite chair, positioned to alert us to all that is new. MM & RY 2010

Sadie and Lily are trying to stay cool, just like all the rest of Philadelphia’s human and pet populations! They enjoy lounging in front of the fan and sipping chilled water. However, due to their status as “young dogs,” they require a lot of exercise. Today was typical of the hottest days at the playground. Sadie and Lily played alone. They ran from shady spot to shady spot. They enjoyed a bit of forest wandering. Lily wallowed in a dirt hole behind the bench. Sadie chased a bird. Both of them cooled off in a post-playground bath.  MM & RY 2010
