Lily wades in Wissahickon Creek
Sadie and Lily love to hike the trails of Wissahickon Park, part of the extensive Fairmount Park system in Philadelphia. Sadie has recently become a mascot with a local research center based at Temple University, called ITSRG. This summer she is joining students on their trail walks as part of a sustainable trails internship between ITSRG and Friends of the Wissahickon Park, the students are completing to learn about how to manage parks for different users. The students are going to visit the trails, survey the uses of the trails and blog about their experiences. They are even going to make maps and models of trail entrances and paths that can be used by others in the future. Sadie is going with some of the groups to lead the way, since she has extensive knowledge of the system due to her many afternoon forest adventures in Fairmount Park.
This weekend, she and Lily got a sneak peak of some of the areas where the students will visit. Lily coached Sadie on the basics of trail adventures: sniff everything, jump in as much water as possible, hop over tree trunks with ease, and most important – keep the people safe. As our readers know, Sadie is an alarm in a dog body. So, we can be assured that our students will know long before they encounter anything or anyone about to pass them that other users are out and about. Oh that Sadie!
