National Dog Day was founded by Colleen Paige to raise awareness about the need to rescue dogs all year. She started the Animal Miracle Foundation to foster public awareness about animal cruelty and homelessness, adoption of animals to end overpopulation, teach children compassion through the love of animals and bring the love of animals to the elderly. The Foundation also organizes and raises funds to create no kill shelters and wild animal sanctuaries. News about the foundation can be found here.
The main event scheduled to celebrate National Dog Day is set for August 23rd on Solomons Island in Calvert County, Maryland. The event is scheduled for 10 am through 5 pm at the Calvert Marine Museum. Detailed information about the event, including a site map, can be found here.
